Preveli Beach

Imagine a place in Greece where a gorge, a river, a lagoon, a sandy beach and a palm grove coexist harmoniously. This paradise is located at the exit of the Kourtaliotis gorge, where the river of the same name flows, creating the unique landscape of Preveli. A visit to Preveli, located 38 kilometers south of Rethymno and 10 kilometers east of Plakias, is an experience that will remain unforgettable.

Preveli Beach, also known as Lake Preveli or Finikas, is one of the most famous and impressive beaches in Crete. The light-colored sand, the pebbled bottom and the crystal clear waters create a landscape straight out of a dream. Behind the beach, a 40-acre riverside palm forest stretches out, with palm trees, willows, oleanders, carob trees and reeds. Although the forest suffered significant damage from a fire in 2010, nature managed to regenerate it quickly, and today it is a protected area of the Natura 2000 network.

Preveli beach has retained its natural character, without umbrellas and sunbeds, offering visitors an authentic experience. A small canteen is the only sign of modern times, offering the bare essentials, so make sure you are organized. If you can't stand the very cool water, avoid the right part of the beach, where the river flows out, and prefer the central part of the sea.

In the 60s and 70s, Preveli was a haven for hippies, Greek and foreign, who camped on the beach, creating makeshift huts. Today, the beach attracts mainly families and couples, and overnight stays are no longer allowed, while protecting the habitat is a priority.

Apart from the beach, the palm grove is equally impressive. Wander along the marked path and get lost in the magical world of nature, where the greenery and the sounds of running water create a unique sense of calm and serenity. Be careful not to stray from the path, to protect this delicate ecosystem.
